Beyond Beauty, Irving Penn Exhibition at the SAAM in DC

One of the foremost photographers of the twentieth century, Irving Penn (1917 - 2009) was celebrated October 23rd at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC. The after hours opening party for Irving Penn's Exhibition "Beyond Beauty" by guest curator Merry Foresta was one of the highlight events this season. (Merry Foresta was the museum's curator of photography from 1983 to 1999.)

This exhibit was the first retrospective of Irving Penn's art in almost twenty years, and what a range of expressive work. This show showed a wide range of the artist abilities and the different stages of his career. From street scenes of the 1930's, to the American South of the 1940's and of course celebrity portraits, fashion photographs, still life, and many of his private studio images.

Most of us may recognize many of his photographs from the cover of Vogue Magazine, but this exhibition had 146 photographs from the museums permanent collection, which included 100 photographs recently donated to the museum by The Irving Penn Foundation.

In a nearly seventy year career, Penn's black and white and color photography skills earned him accolades in both the artistic and commercial worlds. One of Penn's industry accomplishments some say is he was the first photographers to narrow the gap between art and fashion. And simply put he helped define elegance in the 1950's and transformed the mundane into surreal beauty.

Irving Penn's exhibition "Beyond Beauty" can be seen on the 1st Floor West, in the American Art Museum at 8th and F Streets, Washington DC N.W. from October 23rd thru March 20, 2016. We highly recommend visiting this exhibit and all of Irving Penn's creative achievements displayed.
