❤️ 🎨 #Repost @painters.paintings ・・・ René Magritte (1898 - 1967): The art of Conversation, 1963, oil on canvas, 46.4 x 38 cm, . . 'The art of Conversation' by René Magritte belongs to the late period of the artist’s career which started after the World War II. This painting shows a landscape that contains bushes, a road and a distant mountain. But it is almost eclipsed by an overwhelming sky covered in grey clouds among which a shocking and unexpected couple of men in a black coat and a bowling hat floating in the right upper-middle section of the image. These are, in fact, the elements of the picture that the viewer would probably notice first, not only because of their strange situation in the space but also because of the dark colour of the suit that contrasts the soft grey tone of the clouds and the foggy blue of the mountains bellow the scene. The scene is painted in a realistic style and with the illusion of three-dimensionality. However, nothing seems to be real. The two tiny men appear in the right upper section of the scene as if they had been lifted from the road. They are also perfectly situated in the diagonal line that crosses the square from the lower left corner to the upper right corner. If we divide the painting in drawing a cross and therefore consider the lower and the upper parts separately, we could consider them as constituting two different and independent paintings. However, once joined they form an strange but well balanced image.
