๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’” #Repost @prince ・・・ Of all the instruments that Prince played throughout his career, the iconic Cloud Guitar has one of the most alluring and mysterious backstories. ๐Ÿ”ธ The Cloud first entered the public’s consciousness as the object of The Kid’s affection in Purple Rain, and the way Prince’s character in the film pines after the distinctive satin curves of the guitar as it sits in a display window speaks to just how mesmerized he was by this instrument. ๐Ÿ”ธ Prince first came across the model for the Cloud while browsing in a guitar shop with his childhood friend and first bassist, Andrรฉ Cymone, in the late 1970s when Prince was at the very beginning of his solo career. The two musicians were intrigued by the custom bass guitar with hand-carved curves and swirls, which resembled a classical instrument more than one you would see in the hands of a rock or funk musician. ๐Ÿ”ธ In 1983, when it came time for Prince to choose an instrument to play in his first film, he brought the Cloud bass to a young Minneapolis luthier named Dave Rusan, who worked at Prince’s favorite local guitar shop, Knut Koupee Music. Recreating the bass as a prop to use in the film took months, and only four copies of the original white Cloud Guitar were made by Rusan — but his Cloud Guitars laid the groundwork for one of the most intriguing stage instruments of the 1980s. ๐Ÿ”ธ Dave Rusan understood the signi๏ฌcance of a well-crafted guitar to an artist like Prince. “It’s so much more than just part of a costume. It’s a means of expression, power, identity,” he told Premier Guitar. ๐Ÿ”ธ Prince had the Cloud Guitar remade many times throughout his career in different colors and finishes, and the instrument re-emerged at several key points in his artistic evolution. Prince would call on the company @schecterguitarsofficial to repair his Clouds and manufacture new replicas for his use, including a run that was sold to fans on Prince’s HitnRun Tour. ๐Ÿ”ธ In recent years, the Schecter replicas of the iconic Cloud Guitar have only been available to purchase in-person at Paisley Park. But starting today, players around the world can purchase these exclusive, authentic Cloud Guitars from the Official Prin

Did you know? ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’” #Repost @prince ・・・ Prince was constantly toying with the public's perceptions of his sexuality, upbringing, and cultural identity. This shape-shifting wasn’t just happening on stage; behind the scenes, he was also adopting various pseudonyms that allowed him to explore different facets of his creative persona. Beginning with 2 of his first proteges, the Time and Vanity 6, in the early 1980s, Prince would leave his own name out of the liner notes and credit the albums to Jamie Starr or the Starr Company. The sleight-of-hand worked so well that when the Time released their first 2 albums in 1981 and 1982 — which were almost exclusively written and recorded by Prince — the general public had no idea he was involved. “Jamie Starr is an engineer,” @morris_day_and_the_time told @rollingstone in 1983. A 1984 single for Sheena Easton, “Sugar Walls,” was credited to Alexander Nevermind, while the @officialthebangles breakout “Manic Monday” was attributed to Christopher, a name that played on Prince's character in the film Under the Cherry Moon. Each name seemed to give Prince permission to explore a different side of his personality, from the grittier vibe of the Time with Jamie Starr to the country-leaning Joey Coco to the gender fluid falsetto of his alter-ego, Camille. In the 1980s, the music industry was still deeply segregated along racial lines. Even though Prince’s music transcended genre and combined everything from R&B, funk, and gospel to punk and pop, his singles were relegated to the R&B charts for much of his early career. Using different pseudonyms forced the industry to hear his work based on its merit and made it possible for his different identities to chart simultaneously. “I was just getting tired of seeing my name,” the artist told Bass Player Magazine. For Prince, music was the primary focus of his life, and everything else was secondary - including his own identity. “If you give away an idea, you still own that idea,” he continued. "In fact, giving it away strengthens it.” Hear original recordings of the songs Prince wrote as Joey Coco and more on the new collection Originals, now streaming on @tidal and will be released June

๐Ÿ“ธ ๐ŸŽจ ๐Ÿ”ฅ Captured by Arnold Newman, Pablo Picasso, Vallouris, France, 1954. Newman is generally acknowledged as the pioneer of the environmental portrait. He spent time exploring the essence of his subjects, finding the best environment to express who they were, and integrating them with their work into compositions that referenced the work. He structured his own visual language, setting up photographs with jaunty geometric grace and inventing visual elements where none existed thus adding complexity and depth to his portraits. His sense of tension, rhythm, and balance, guides the eye through his command of composition. .#arnoldnewman #fineartphotography #picasso #pablopicasso #master
